SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Are your customers finding you?
We get a lot of questions about SEO. It turns out; most people don't
know what it is, what it does, how it works, or how to take advantage
of it.
What it is:
Search Engine Optimization is a process that helps you to increase your
rankings in the Search Engines. Why is this important? It is one
of the most inexpensive forms of marketing that you can ever engage in!
SEO helps you:
What it does:
SEO gets you noticed! When customers search for you in the search engines
it returns a ranked listing based on how important the search engine determines
you to be. Increasing your ranking means increasing your website traffic,
which ultimately means increasing your website sales.
How it works:
There are three segments to SEO:
- Site Optimization
- Site Submission
- Ongoing Maintenance and Strategy
Site optimization
Optimizing your site involves the placement of "tags" and other
pieces of code and text into your website that are relevant to what search
engine users place for their search. A good example of this is the use
of a Site Description and MetaTags. A Site Description tells the search
engine what your site is about and what terms to relate it to. For instance,
your site may be about Olympic Skiers. In this case optimizing the site
may involve placing a description relevant to Olympic skiers into the
site. MetaTags are pieces of code placed into the website that are picked
up by search engines and used to index the pages.
Site Submission
Just because you have a website doesn't mean that you are
recognized or "indexed" by the search engines. Search engines
are like a giant directory. But like all directories, you have to make
sure they know who you are before you can be listed. The same applies
to search engines. In order to be indexed, you must have your website
submitted to the search engines. Following your submission, it may take
from 30-90 days for the search engines to include your site in their
information gathering and to display you when someone conducts a search
for a term you might normally be found under.
Ongoing Maintenance and Strategy
If you engage in optimizing your site (as well you should)
you should also engage in tracking, maintaining, and strategizing to
increase your rankings. Once your site is picked up by the search engines,
you will need to know where you rank and have a plan to increase the
ranking from there. Search engines consistently change how they view
the importance of a site and how it is ranked, so some fluctuation can
occur. Your competition is continually adjusting and strategizing to
increase their rankings, so it is important you do this as well. Search
engine maintenance is one of the least expensive forms of marketing you
can ever engage in, so it is important to pay attention to it.
How do I take advantage of it?
Get your site marketed! Start driving traffic to your site. SEO is
an effective and one of the least expensive ways you can market your business
on the internet.
